During his opening address, Mr. Micallef outlined his strategy to promote fairness across different age groups, cater to the requirements of future generations, and safeguard young individuals, with a special focus on their mental well-being. Improving the substandard working conditions that undermine the sector's competitiveness is a top concern, stated Mr. Micallef. He expressed his commitment to evaluating the existing legislative deficiencies in this field during his initial month and to setting up yearly thematic workshops with EU member states.

The commissioner-designate vowed to spearhead what is being called a "Culture Compass"—a strategic initiative designed to leverage various aspects of culture. One key component of this initiative would focus on tackling the particular issue that greatly affects the music industry.
During the discussion, participants addressed the difficulties associated with Artificial Intelligence and the need to secure substantial backing for the cultural sector from the EU's long-term budget. On Monday, the committees responsible for International Trade and Constitutional Affairs conducted a session to interview Maroš Šefčovič, the Slovak candidate nominated for roles concerning Trade and Economic Security, as well as Interinstitutional Relations and Transparency.
The leaders of the committee and coordinators from various political groups will promptly convene to evaluate the abilities and credentials of the proposed Commissioner.
In his opening remarks, Mr. Šefčovič highlighted to Members of the European Parliament that international trade is characterized by intense competition involving groundbreaking technologies and the strategic use of economic dependencies. He emphasized that trade has become a "geostrategic tool." As the US elections draw near, the Commissioner-designate expressed his intention to propose a collaboration offer regardless of the election results. He further mentioned that the European Union needs to address its disagreements with the United States, particularly in areas such as steel and aluminum tariffs, as well as the protectionist aspects of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA).
Regarding the relations between institutions, he promised to improve how the Commission collaborates with Parliament, particularly by updating the Framework Agreement. Mr. Šefčovič also mentioned that the Commission is dedicated to acting on Parliament's indirect legislative proposals, providing detailed explanations when employing the special procedure outlined in Article 122, and supporting advancements in Parliament's quest for a complete right of inquiry. Additionally, he revealed plans to broaden the EU's Transparency Register to include "all managers."

Mr. Šefčovič characterized China as the EU's most difficult trade partner, emphasizing the need for a more balanced relationship. Addressing Members of the European Parliament, he mentioned that following the recent implementation of EU tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles, negotiators from the European Commission are now engaging with Chinese officials to discuss price agreements. "The EU is not seeking trade conflicts; rather, we aim to adjust our interactions with China in sectors where we believe there is unfairness," Mr. Šefčovič remarked, highlighting issues such as excessive production capacity, subsidies, and the absence of a level playing field.
Mercosur, Israel, and Free Trade Agreements
Members of the European Parliament questioned the Commissioner-designate about the current talks with the Mercosur nations, which include Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay. Mr. Šefčovič committed to advancing free trade agreements with Mexico and Australia and expressed a desire for the EU to increase its engagement in Thailand, the Philippines, and India. In his responses to the MEPs, he highlighted the Sustainable Investment Facilitation Agreement with Angola and the Economic Partnership Agreement with Kenya as innovative agreements that could benefit the EU.
During a session with Members of the European Parliament, Mr. Šefčovič addressed concerns about whether the European Union was violating international law by maintaining its trade relationship with Israel through the EU-Israel association agreement. He explained that any modifications to this agreement would require the unanimous approval of all member states.

She expressed her belief that the partygate scandal had been exaggerated and criticized the Conservative government for instituting fixed penalty notices as a punishment for breaking COVID restrictions.
"The issue was that it was a mistake to make normal activities illegal in the manner we did," the MP for North West Essex said on the BBC's Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg show.
"Individuals who were out walking were all issued fixed penalty notices. This situation ultimately ensnared Boris Johnson."

The controversy led to Mr. Johnson receiving a fine for his participation in a gathering at Downing Street, which was one of multiple events held during his leadership that violated Covid lockdown rules.
She stated that it was due to Downing Street staff violating protocols which ultimately led to Mr. Johnson, the Prime Minister then, and the Chancellor at the time, Mr. Sunak, receiving fines.
"She stated that individuals in the administration failed to follow the regulations, though they were not Members of Parliament."
"Many of them were staff members, and I believe the regulations we established ultimately ensnared Boris Johnson."

Ms. Badenoch stepped down from her position in Mr. Johnson's administration in 2022, expressing her admiration for him as "a great prime minister." Nonetheless, she acknowledged that there were "significant unresolved problems" that gave the public the impression that "we were self-serving."
Following his penalty for attending his birthday celebration at Downing Street, Mr. Johnson stated, "Honestly, it didn't cross my mind at that moment that this could have violated the regulations."
Ellie Reeves, the Labour Party chair, criticized Ms. Badenoch for describing the partygate scandal as "overblown," stating that such remarks deepen the hurt for British families who adhered to regulations, missing the deaths and funerals of loved ones while her peers celebrated at Downing Street.

Following her victory in the leadership race, Ms. Badenoch stated that the Conservative Party must acknowledge the errors that contributed to its defeat in the July election.
"Ms. Badenoch stated, "The success of our nation hinges on our party."
"To make our voices count, we must acknowledge our errors and admit that we allowed our standards to decline.
"The moment is now to speak honestly, uphold our values, prepare for what lies ahead, redefine our political landscape and our perspectives, and provide both our party and our nation with the fresh beginning they rightfully need.
"The moment has arrived to focus on our tasks. We must initiate a renewal."

Prime Minister Keir Starmer Vows to Double Border Security Funding to £150m in Global Crackdown on People Smuggling
Funding for Border Security Command to increase to £150 million to 'crush criminal groups'
Sir Keir Starmer is launching a week of intensive focus on human trafficking while presiding over the Interpol general assembly and visiting Hungary.

Monday, November 4, 2024, 1:
In a speech to Interpol's general assembly, Sir Keir Starmer stated that human trafficking ought to be considered a worldwide security risk, comparable to terrorism.
The prime minister called on global leaders to recognize the serious nature of this issue, stating that ignoring the deaths of individuals in the English Channel is not a forward-thinking approach.
In Glasgow, following his commitment to an additional £75 million for the UK government's Border Security Command (BSC), the total investment will now reach £150 million over the forthcoming two years, effectively doubling the funding.
Sir Keir stated that the funds would be allocated to establish "a new organized immigration crime intelligence unit, which would include hundreds of new investigators and intelligence officers equipped with advanced technology."
Funds will also be allocated to the National Crime Agency, which will use the money to improve its data analysis and intelligence functions. Additionally, the government plans to pass laws to provide those combating these gangs with increased authority, according to Sir Keir.
The Prime Minister has declared an additional £6 million in support for Interpol, along with a £24 million boost aimed at combating major global crimes that impact the UK, such as narcotics, arms, and fraud, with a special focus on the Western Balkans.
The sources of the funds remain uncertain.
The Labour Party allocated an initial £75 million to the BSC by discontinuing the previous Conservative government's Rwanda initiative. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper announced on Monday that the remaining funds would come from new allocations made in last week’s budget.
Sir Keir addressed top officials and law enforcement representatives from Interpol's 196 member countries, stating: "Human trafficking should be considered a worldwide security risk, akin to terrorism.
"We need to pool our assets, exchange information and strategies, and address the issue at its source by collaborating to close off the smuggling pathways."
He emphasized that his "personal mission" is to combat human trafficking networks, and "it begins right here in the UK."
"We will handle human traffickers with the same severity as terrorists. Our proven counter-terrorism strategies will now be implemented against these criminal groups," he stated.
"Ignoring the tragic deaths of men, women, and children in the Channel does not represent progress."
"This despicable business needs to be eradicated wherever it flourishes."

The activities starting this Monday initiate a week of intense focus by Sir Keir on tackling human trafficking, following his election pledge to dismantle the criminal networks and establish the BSC to assist in this effort.
In October, crossings of the Chanel Channel hit their peak for the year, surpassing 5,000 individuals.

After Sir Keir's speech, a spokesperson from Downing Street addressed the press, stating that ministers are committed to advancing quickly on the issue of migrant crossings, although they did not disclose whether there was a specific target set.
Speaking on Sky News Monday morning, Ms. Cooper declined to specify when the new funding might reduce the number of small boat crossings, or whether the French authorities could increase their efforts.

A spokesperson for the Conservative Party stated: "Keir Starmer's new plan to address gang issues will be ineffective unless it includes measures to deter migrants from attempting the perilous Channel crossing.
It's disappointing that Starmer and the Labour Party failed to acknowledge the severity of the Channel crisis earlier, especially since they opposed multiple initiatives aimed at dismantling smuggling networks during their time in opposition.
"If Starmer persists in overlooking the necessity of implementing measures to deter migrants from attempting to cross the Channel, the number of fatalities will likely increase as the flow of migrants remains unabated. It is crucial that he addresses this crisis effectively."

Labour MP Dawn Butler faced backlash for sharing a message that labeled Kemi Badenoch as "the leading figure among black collaborators of white supremacy."
Ms. Butler quickly removed her retweet of a statement by British-Nigerian writer Nels Abbey, shared on X just before the results of the Conservative leadership race were declared.
In the post, which he later explained was meant humorously, he shared "useful advice on how to cope with the sudden rise of Badenochism (a.k.a. white supremacy disguised by a Black front)."
Ms. Butler's retweet sparked significant backlash from Conservative members, including Huntingdon MP Ben Obese-Jecty, who stated that Ms. Butler was "not the only one among the government's ranks to share this opinion about Kemi [Badenoch]."
"He added that this serves as a test for Keir Starmer to either withdraw the whip or appear to tacitly endorse Butler's reprehensible endorsement of the smear."
Sir Keir Starmer has previously removed the Labour Party whip from MPs following remarks made about prominent Black Conservative politicians.
In 2022, Sir Keir Starmer took the action of suspending Rupa Huq from the party after she referred to the then-chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng as being "superficially" black.

"Although we have many differences in opinion, I still extend my congratulations to her on her recent election victory."
In subsequent messages, Mr. Abbey clarified that his initial remarks were "obviously satirical" and "meant to be a sketch."
