Brundle Labels Red Bull’s Dramatic Dip in Form as ‘Too Strange’ Amid F1 Title Race Tensions
Martin Brundle describes Red Bull's problems as "too strange"
"After the race, Max referred to the car as a 'monster,' which all feels quite bizarre."
Sky Sports F1 analyst Martin Brundle has labeled Red Bull's noticeable decline in performance as "unusually odd," after a disappointing showing at the Italian Grand Prix.
At Monza, Red Bull emerged as the fourth-quickest team, with their driver Max Verstappen crossing the finish line in sixth place, trailing the race victor Charles Leclerc by more than 35 seconds.
Their disappointing performance on Sunday has reduced their lead over McLaren to just eight points in the F1 constructors' championship.
Verstappen maintains a significant advantage in the drivers' championship, holding a 62-point lead over Lando Norris with eight races remaining.
Yet, as McLaren's performance continues to improve compared to Red Bull's, Verstappen's likelihood of keeping the championship fades more after every race.
The decline in Red Bull's performance is puzzling, especially since Verstappen had a strong lead in the first four races of the season.
In his column for Sky Sports following the race, Brundle shared his insights on the situation with Red Bull.
"In response to their less favorable starting positions of seventh and eighth on the grid, Red Bull opted for a different approach, choosing to have Verstappen and Sergio Perez begin the race on hard compound tires," Brundle noted.
The leading competitors were pushing their vehicles to the limit, a strategy that seemed wise particularly since there was no safety car deployed. However, less-than-smooth pit stops on the 22nd and 23rd laps, followed by a lackluster speed and the decision to make two pit stops, ultimately resulted in Red Bull finishing in sixth and eighth positions.
After the race, Max referred to the car as a 'monster,' which appeared quite odd.
"They excelled at the beginning of the season, and during last year's race in Monza, Max secured his 10th consecutive victory with ease. However, this year he ended the race 38 seconds after the champion crossed the finish line."
Red Bull might face further challenges ahead, particularly with races in Azerbaijan and Singapore on the horizon.
This year, Red Bull has found it challenging to perform on street circuits, with their performance in Singapore marking the lowest point of their otherwise strong 2023 season.
On the other hand, McLaren has demonstrated versatility, delivering strong performances across various tracks, despite claiming victory in only three events this season.
