Boris Johnson Lauds Poll Workers for Enforcing ID Laws He Set, Despite Personal Voting Snag

Published

Boris Johnson has expressed his appreciation for the election workers who enforced the rule that he could not cast his vote without presenting a photo ID. This ID requirement, introduced during his tenure as prime minister, sparked debate due to concerns that it might prevent individuals from participating in elections.

Boris Johnson has commended the villagers who, as reported by Sky News, denied him entry to a polling station because he lacked the necessary photo identification, which was required under regulations he had implemented.

The ex-leader tried to vote using a magazine cover bearing his name and address as identification, but he was stopped from doing so.

During his tenure at Downing Street, Mr. Johnson initiated the mandate for photo identification under the Elections Act 2022.

The decision sparked controversy due to concerns that it would prevent certain individuals, especially those from underprivileged communities, from participating in the voting process

Mr. Johnson was attempting to cast his ballot in South Oxfordshire for the election of the police and crime commissioner in the Thames Valley area.

In his column for the Daily Mail, he wrote: "I would like to specifically commend the three villagers who, on Thursday, appropriately refused me entry to the polling station when I showed up with only my Prospect magazine sleeve as identification, which had my name and address printed on it.

"I presented it to them and they seemed quite skeptical… shortly after, I returned with my driver's license and cast my vote for the Conservative party."
