Binder and Miller’s Rain Dance: How KTM’s Duo Conquered San Marino’s Sketchy MotoGP and Leapfrogged Aprilia in Constructors’ Standings
Jack Miller and Brad Binder from KTM share insights on handling rainy conditions
The KTM Factory team riders, Brad Binder and Jack Miller, continue to accumulate points, showcasing their skills in the challenging conditions of the San Marino MotoGP.
KTM surpassed Aprilia to claim the second spot in the 2024 MotoGP Constructors' rankings, thanks to standout performances from team riders Brad Binder and Jack Miller under the challenging circumstances at the San Marino MotoGP.
Binder and Miller, both recognized for their adept skills in challenging weather conditions, saw a significant improvement in their standings during a brief period of rain at Misano, momentarily securing positions within the top three.
Despite losing some momentum as the conditions got better, Binder managed to maintain a strong position, securing a fourth-place finish.
The South African expressed contentment with the outcome, particularly as it elevated him to fifth place in the overall rankings. However, he has not secured a podium finish since the season began in Qatar.
"He mentioned, 'The race was quite unique. Sitting at the starting line felt uncertain because although there was a light drizzle, it wasn't substantial enough to notice it affecting the track surface.'"
"There was a moment when the track became slightly wet, but by the following lap, it had mostly dried up, making it challenging to determine the level of aggression to apply and the risks involved."
"I'm content with securing fourth place; I believe we performed to the best of our abilities today."
Talking about the weather conditions, Miller, who has yet to secure a seat for the 2025 MotoGP season, shared how he tried to remain composed under the circumstances, reminding himself that rain always appears more intense when moving at a fast pace.
"He expressed satisfaction, noting, "Navigating through the rain is challenging, especially when you notice the droplets on your visor. However, I reassured myself by thinking that the vast distance I'm covering makes the rainfall seem more intense than it actually is."
"The bends were somewhat slick, so my goal was to steer clear of them. Having Marc, Pecco, and Brad ahead of me for a while was a stroke of luck because it meant I wasn't the first one navigating uncharted territory. Observing their maneuvers helped me in bridging the distance."
KTM hasn't secured a victory yet this year, in contrast to Aprilia, who has triumphed four times. Despite this, the Austrian brand currently occupies the second position in the constructors' rankings, with seven races left in the 2024 season.
