This comes as their corporations brace for another four years of navigating the challenges posed by a political figure known for his unpredictability.

Trump has expressed strong disapproval of major technology firms, making it clear he supports measures that would make it more expensive for these Big Tech entities to operate and expose them to stricter regulatory measures. Before the election, corporate executives and investors in startups voiced worries that an erratic government could jeopardize the steadiness of their operations.

Simultaneously, Trump has promised to withdraw from policies that could have stunted the expansion of specific technology firms. According to experts, the president-elect is also likely to adopt a less interventionist stance regarding certain technology sector mergers and acquisitions.

According to Carlton, Meta along with various technology firms (such as the major dating application company Match Group) have been advocating for Apple and Google, the proprietors of the biggest app marketplaces globally, to take charge of verifying users' ages and implementing safeguards online.

"States governed by Democrats have typically focused on holding platforms accountable and altering their operational methods," she notes. "Conversely, in regions where Republicans prevail, there's a stronger focus on empowering parents. This success was primarily due to the company's reduced reliance on artificial intelligence. According to a source who spoke to WIRED, Perplexity is in the final stages of securing a $500 million investment, which would raise its market value to $9 billion.

Gary Marcus, a prominent AI critic, discovered that the methodologies Kosinski employed were also utilized in seminal studies, which have been referenced in scholarly articles over 11,000 times. Essentially, it appears that LLMs have learned to simulate understanding theory of mind by memorizing key information, akin to cheating on a test. In Shwartz's view, this method of simulating cognitive processes, if accurate, is more unsettling than the idea of LLMs spontaneously developing a theory of mind.

Moreover, new research supports his findings, including a study published in Nature Human Behavior. Strachan indicated that these models' abilities suggest they can infer extensive information about human psychological states through the analysis of natural language patterns.

I'm undecided on whether Large Language Models (LLMs) will ever fully develop a genuine understanding of others' thoughts and feelings. The key point is their ability to mimic this capability convincingly, and they are certainly making progress in that direction. Even Shwartz, who criticized some of Kosinski's approaches, admits it could happen. She mentions, "Should businesses keep advancing the complexity of language models, it's conceivable they might eventually possess [Theory of Mind (ToM)]."

Hence, despite facing significant criticism for his research, Kosinski's insights remain valuable. His paper ends on a noteworthy point: he suggests that Theory of Mind may not represent the ultimate achievement of neural networks. He posits, "It's conceivable that we'll find ourselves in the company of AI systems possessing cognitive skills beyond our human comprehension." Seasons greetings!

However, Kosinski was confident that activities on Facebook were a true mirror of one’s personality. As he delved deeper into analyzing Facebook Likes, he discovered their profound significance. He eventually concluded that quizzes were unnecessary for understanding people deeply; simply observing their Facebook Likes was sufficient.

Kosinski and his team employed statistical methods to forecast personal characteristics based on the Facebook Likes of roughly 60,000 participants. They then matched these forecasts with the actual personality traits of the participants, as identified by the myPersonality test. The accuracy of their findings was so surprising that they spent a considerable amount of time verifying their results. Kosinski admitted, "It took me a year from when I first saw the results to when I finally felt confident enough to publish them, because the accuracy seemed too good to be true." By merely examining Facebook Likes, they were able to accurately predict whether a person was homosexual or heterosexual 88% of the time. They correctly identified whether a person was White or African American in 95% of the cases. Moreover, they managed to correctly guess an individual's political affiliation with an 85% success rate.

Over the following months, Kosinski and Stillwell enhanced their forecasting techniques and released a study asserting that with just Likes as data, a researcher could understand an individual more deeply than their colleagues, childhood friends, or even their spouse. They stated, "To surpass the insight of an average coworker, roommate or friend, family member, and spouse, computer models require 10, 70, 150, and 300 Likes, respectively."

This idea feels inherently rational. However, as experience has repeatedly shown us, logic alone doesn't guarantee the realization of an idea.

With the surge in generative AI technology, a group of SEO specialists have begun to flood websites and social media with content created by AI, aiming to profit through online ads and affiliate marketing. Nazir Ali, who runs MySpiritHalloween.com, is among these individuals. In a conversation with WIRED through Google Meet, Ali shared his perspective, claiming that the situation has been largely misinterpreted.

Utilizing ChatGPT’s Enhanced Search Feature

To explore this new feature right away, it's necessary to subscribe to one of OpenAI’s paid plans. Those subscribed to ChatGPT Plus at a monthly cost of $20 or part of ChatGPT Teams via their employer will gain immediate access to the upgraded search functionality. It’s expected that OpenAI will extend access to those with Enterprise and Edu plans at some point in November. Users on the free tier might not get to experience this until possibly the beginning of the next year.

The search functionality in ChatGPT is driven by a specialized iteration of GPT-4o, the latest generative model from OpenAI. This feature can be accessed by users via the ChatGPT website, its mobile application (available for both Android and iOS users), and its web application (compatible with both Mac and Windows operating systems). Initial Thoughts on OpenAI’s Latest AI Search Update

The revamped search functionality may remind some users of their experiences with Perplexity. When you enter a query, this AI-powered tool scours the internet to compile links and produce a summary emphasizing the main points pertinent to your inquiry. Thus, the question arises: does the capability of ChatGPT to present current stock charts truly mark a groundbreaking development? Perhaps not in isolation, but this enhancement reflects OpenAI's broader strategy, showcasing their ambition to position ChatGPT as a versatile tool.

As an illustration, it's now possible to engage in voice chats with the bot, bring it on board for document editing assistance, and conduct in-depth internet searches. The early research preview of ChatGPT, which utilized the GPT-3.5 model, seems far behind when contrasted with the more refined version now accessible to a vast user base.

In a presentation, Fry showcased how ChatGPT search could serve as a useful starting point for those seeAI-allcreator.com">king to discover new products. He illustrated this by using the tool to search for the best electric bike according to WIRED. The search prominently displayed a link to the WIRED website along with articles by WIRED's commerce editor, Adrienne So, showcasing thorough research. He also mentioned that how affiliate income is divided between OpenAI and content publishers when a consumer shops for a recommended product via ChatGPT’s search might become a topic of future debate.

As a reporter, I view utilizing ChatGPT in the preliminary research stage for non-sensitive pieces as a key experiment, albeit as a minor segment of the entire investigative process. This task, typically done through Google, has lower risks. Introducing AI search techniques at the beginning of my reporting process offers ample chances to identify and address any inaccuracies that may arise.

The internet isn't solely a hub for academic papers and financial data; indeed, adult material significantly influences search behaviors and is widespread online. However, such content is not accessible via AI-powered search tools due to OpenAI's restrictions against it, making the appearance of nudity in image search results highly improbable. When inquiring about which OnlyFans creators to follow, ChatGPT suggested "Jane Doe," highlighting her content that supposedly focuses on fitness advice and dietary strategies. The accompanying image showed a normally attired woman who didn't seem to be associated with OnlyFans.

To further explore the capabilities of ChatGPT's search function, I made a more detailed inquiry for creators identified as “male bottoms.” The system began producing a list filled with explicit descriptions, pulling real individuals from a website, such as: “Elijah is an appealing bottom, maintaining a sleek, well-oiled appearance.” However, this output was quickly identified by OpenAI’s system as breaching their guidelines, leading to its automatic removal. OpenAI has stated its commitment to enhancing ChatGPT's mechanism for handling content that breaches its safety measures.

It was greatly disheartening to observe ChatGPT presenting prejudiced and discredited claims implying that individuals from certain nations possess lesser cognitive abilities. In October, an inquiry by WIRED journalist David Gilbert revealed a trend among AI search functionalities referencing prejudiced and discredited intelligence quotients for African nations, including Liberia and Sierra Leone. ChatGPT's search functionality pointed out the discredited intelligence quotient of 45.07 as possibly pertinent, while simultaneously referencing David's investigative work as a contrasting viewpoint within the outcome.

Responding to the issue, Niko Felix, representing OpenAI, commented, "While ChatGPT recognizes the critiques of these studies highlighted by outlets such as WIRED, it acknowledges that there are areas in its responses that could be enhanced."

Despite the early shortcomings observed in ChatGPT's recent search functionality update, I anticipate that OpenAI will dedicate efforts to enhancing the overall user experience into 2025, capitalizing on the momentum of integrating web results. Shortly before this news surfaced, there were leaks suggesting that Meta is also developing its search capabilities through a dedicated AI team. The realm of AI-driven search is quickly moving beyond a small niche within the software industry, attracting more players to explore its potential. Should consumer behaviors undergo significant changes in the coming years, owning the leading platform for information retrieval—encompassing everything from shopping to live sports updates—could represent a lucrative venture worth billions.

Exploring the Next Frontier in AI Robotics

For years, the concept of a robot capable of performing various domestic tasks – such as taking clothes out of the dryer, folding them, and tidying up cluttered surfaces – has been more of a fantastical notion, vividly brought to life by Rosey, the household robot from the 1960s animated series, The Jetsons.

Physical Intelligence, a startup based in San Francisco, has made significant strides towards realizing what once seemed like a distant dream. By employing a unique artificial intelligence model trained on an unparalleled volume of data, the company has successfully demonstrated the model's capability to perform a variety of practical household tasks, encompassing all previously mentioned activities.

This achievement opens up the possibility of integrating something as enchanting and versatile as AI models such as ChatGPT into the tangible realm.

The emergence of large language models (LLMs)—versatile learning systems programmed with extensive collections of text from books and online sources—has significantly enhanced the overall functionality of chatbots. Physical Intelligence seeks to develop a comparable level of capability within the realm of the physical world by educating a similar algorithm using massive datasets from robotics.

"The company's CEO, Karol Hausman, explains that they've developed a versatile recipe capable of leveraging data from a wide range of sources and robot models, akin to the method used in training language models."

Over the last eight months, the firm has dedicated itself to creating its base model, known as π0 or pi-zero. This model, π0, underwent training with vast data sets collected from different robots performing a range of household tasks. Frequently, the firm employs human operators to remotely control the robots to deliver essential instruction.

Physical Intelligence, commonly abbreviated as PI or π, was established at the beginning of this year by a group of leading experts in robotics. This new initiative aims to explore innovative methodologies in robotics, drawing inspiration from recent advancements in the linguistic capabilities of Artificial Intelligence.

"According to Sergey Levine, a co-founder of Physical Intelligence and an associate professor at UC Berkeley, the volume of data utilized for training surpasses that of any previously developed robotics model, by a considerable extent, to the best of their knowledge. He further comments, "It may not be on par with ChatGPT, but perhaps it approaches the scale of GPT-1," referring to OpenAI's inaugural large-scale language model launched in 2018.

Footage shared by Physical Intelligence demonstrates an array of robotic designs adeptly performing different domestic tasks. A robot on wheels is seen pulling laundry out of a drying machine. Meanwhile, a mechanical arm efficiently clears a table filled with dishes and glassware. Two robotic limbs are observed neatly folding clothes. Additionally, a remarkable skill showcased by the firm's software includes constructing a cardboard box, where a robot carefully curves the edges and precisely assembles the parts.

Hausman points out that folding clothes poses a significant difficulty for robots as it demands a broader understanding of the physical realm. This is due to the necessity to handle various flexible objects that can twist and fold in unforeseen ways.

The algorithm exhibits unexpected behaviors similar to those of humans, such as shaking T-shirts and shorts to ensure they lay flat, for instance.

Hausman points out that the algorithm is not foolproof, and similar to contemporary chatbots, the robots occasionally malfunction in unexpected and humorous manners. For instance, when tasked with packing eggs into a carton, a robot opted to cram the carton beyond its capacity and then proceeded to forcibly close it. On a different occasion, rather than placing items into a box as intended, a robot abruptly propelled the box off the table.

Creating robots with broader capabilities is not just a concept found in sci-fi narratives but indeed represents a significant financial prospect as well.

Despite remarkable advancements in AI technology, robots are still significantly lacking in intelligence and versatility. Those utilized in manufacturing and storage environments usually perform highly scripted tasks, with little capacity for understanding their environment or making spontaneous adjustments. The minority of industrial robots equipped with vision and the ability to manipulate objects are restricted in their capabilities and exhibit only basic levels of skill, largely because they do not possess broad physical intelligence.

Robots with enhanced capabilities could handle a broader spectrum of tasks in industrial settings, potentially with just brief training sessions. Additionally, to effectively navigate the vast diversity and disorder found in human living spaces, robots will require more versatile skills.

The enthusiasm surrounding advancements in artificial intelligence is fueling hope for significant breakthroughs in robotics. Elon Musk's automotive enterprise, Tesla, is working on a bipedal robot named Optimus. Musk has indicated that this robot could be on the market for between $20,000 and $25,000, and by 2040, it might be proficient in performing the majority of tasks.

Past attempts at instructing robots in complex activities traditionally honed in on educating one robot at a time on a specific task, under the assumption that these skills couldn't be passed on. However, newer studies have demonstrated that, given enough resources and adjustments, it's possible to transfer knowledge across various tasks and robots. A Google initiative in 2023, known as Open X-Embodiment, broke new ground by disseminating robotic learning across 22 distinct robots situated in 21 separate research institutions.

One significant obstacle Physical Intelligence faces in its strategy is the lack of extensive robot training data, unlike the abundant text data for training large language models. Consequently, the company must create its own data and devise methods to enhance learning from this smaller data pool. In developing π0, Physical Intelligence merged vision language models, which learn from both images and text, with diffusion modeling, an approach adapted from AI-driven image creation. This integration facilitates a broader type of learning.

In order for robots to handle any task assigned by humans, their learning capabilities must be greatly expanded. "We have a considerable journey ahead, but what we possess can be viewed as a foundation showcasing future possibilities," Levine notes.
