Aston Martin’s Early Celebration of Adrian Newey Signing Draws Christian Horner’s Ire
Christian Horner criticizes Aston Martin's early celebration of Adrian Newey
Red Bull team principal Christian Horner takes a jab at Aston Martin's announcement regarding Adrian Newey, reports Lewis Larkam from Baku.
Christian Horner has criticized Aston Martin for prematurely celebrating the arrival of F1 design expert Adrian Newey, who remains under contract with Red Bull.
Aston Martin formally announced the recruitment of Newey on Tuesday during a significant press event at their cutting-edge facility in Silverstone, just before this weekend's Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
Newey arranged to leave his existing contract with Red Bull ahead of schedule so he could begin his role at Aston Martin in March 2025. However, he is still officially bound by his contract, even though he has already reduced his involvement in Formula 1 activities.
Red Bull's team boss, Horner, took a subtle jab at how Aston Martin revealed their acquisition of Newey. The announcement happened at Silverstone, where Newey was present alongside key team members like owner Lawrence Stroll and drivers Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll.
"Aston's announcement was clearly significant," Horner stated to the press, which included Crash.net, during Friday's conference in Baku.
Adrian has always been known for pursuing his unique path. The team decided to mark a significant occasion, possibly a bit too early, considering he hasn't yet completed his contract with Red Bull Racing.
"Clearly, it was a significant event for the team."
Horner commented, "It wasn't very surprising. It was increasingly evident that he would take that path instead of retiring or joining another team."
“It’s clear that this will be a new challenge for him, and we’ll feel sad when he departs next year. However, we send him our best wishes for the future and cherish the nearly 20 years we’ve had together, remembering both the good times and the bad.”
"We are excited about what lies ahead and are in a strong position to take advantage of it."
Horner commended Newey’s distinctive approach to work and mentioned that Aston Martin is sure to gain from his expertise.
"Adrian is extremely inventive," Horner remarked. "He stands out from typical designers. I believe he's the sole individual in Formula 1 who continues to use a drawing board."
"There will inevitably be a period where everyone gets to know each other and understand each other's working styles. However, he stands out in many ways. Aston will aim to leverage his extensive experience."
