Alonso’s Candid Take on Aston Martin’s Struggle Amid Optimistic Future Projections
Fernando Alonso candidly acknowledges performance shortfall
"We've been falling slightly behind the leading teams"
Fernando Alonso acknowledges that Aston Martin is facing difficulties and emphasizes the importance of not yet concentrating on 2025.
The prospects for Lawrence Stroll's Formula 1 squad look promising and thrilling, especially following the announcement of Adrian Newey joining as a shareholder and taking on the role of managing technical partner.
Aston Martin's recent establishment of a facility at Silverstone, coupled with the development of their proprietary wind tunnel and a partnership with Honda, indicates numerous reasons for optimism.
However, they are facing a challenging year.
Alonso secured the eighth position in the F1 Singapore Grand Prix, following his sixth-place finish in Azerbaijan.
Undoubtedly, McLaren, Red Bull, Ferrari, and Mercedes possess speedier vehicles.
"Securing the eighth position surpassed our anticipations for the Singapore race," Alonso remarked.
Clearly, the qualification results were quite promising, and with a start from the seventh position, we had hopes that finishing in either eighth or ninth place could be achievable, and ultimately, we managed to do just that.
The team executed a smart strategy – we were trailing Nico Hulkenberg, but by making an undercut maneuver on Lap 23, we successfully passed him. Therefore, securing the eighth position was likely the best outcome.
"We're entering a brief pause before heading to Austin, during which we must uncover additional potential within the vehicle.
"We've been falling slightly behind the leading teams, finding ourselves among the middle ranks. Our goal is to turn this scenario around."
Alonso insisted that it is crucial for Aston Martin to advance their progress during the last six races of this season instead of shifting their entire attention to the upcoming year.
He further stated, "In the recent two street circuit races, our qualifying performances were strong. However, during the races, the challenge of overtaking made it crucial for us to maintain our positions."
"However, this does not conceal the underperformance observed in the recent series of events."
"We know about it, and the team is going all out."
"When the vehicle is functioning optimally, we're present to accumulate points. During periods of difficulty, such as the current moment, we continue to garner points as the team effectively executes its responsibilities while being cognizant of the circumstances."
