Alonso Cries Foul: Claims Hamilton’s Lack of Penalty in Miami Sprint Due to Nationality Bias

Published

on

Fernando Alonso expressed dissatisfaction with the officials' choice to overlook penalizing Lewis Hamilton following their first-lap collision in Miami, suggesting the decision was influenced by Hamilton not being Spanish.

Fernando Alonso is of the opinion that Lewis Hamilton avoided a penalty for their first-lap collision in the Miami sprint race due to his non-Spanish nationality.

Hamilton made a sharp move to the inside of Alonso, pushing the Spanish driver into his teammate, which then resulted in a collision with Lando Norris.

Lance Stroll and Norris exited the race prematurely, whereas Alonso experienced a tire puncture, causing him to fall behind in the standings.

Heading into this weekend, the double world champion was already annoyed with the F1 officials, following a 10-second time penalty he received during the sprint race at the Chinese Grand Prix.

Alonso was found to have forced Sainz off the circuit during the Shanghai race, resulting in a three-point penalty being added to his record.

In a conversation with DAZN following the sprint race in Miami, Alonso remarked, "Let's wait and see what their decision will be. I presume they'll opt not to make any decision, given that he doesn't hail from Spain.

"However, it seems he spoiled the competition for several participants, particularly Norris, who had a notably swift vehicle and was eliminated due to that mishap."

Alonso disclosed that he avoided attempting to pass Esteban Ocon, fearing another possible penalty.

"Perhaps I wasn't penalized today, but it seems I'm always penalized," he further stated.

"Today was a repeat scenario. I found myself trailing Ocon once again. There was a potential chance for me to overtake him, perhaps by taking a gamble, but I opted for caution instead of facing a penalty."

"I made an attempt to finish the race, involving 19 laps, then return to my team to discuss the modifications."

Alonso expressed his discontent by referring to the sprint race as simply "a free practice" session to gear up for the grand prix qualifying.

"He clarified that they were not focused on the sprint race. Their goal was to assess wear and other factors for the following day, and in the end, they succeeded. For them, it's essentially a practice session, not an actual race."

"Now, we're entering the crucial phase of the competition, with the qualifying today and the 57-lap race tomorrow. Based on the results from this sprint, as we enter the parc ferme period, we'll evaluate and see if there's any way to enhance the performance of the car."
