Alleged Big Oil $1B Donation Offer for Policy Reversal Rocks Trump’s Campaign

According to a Washington Post article, during a recent gathering with leading oil industry figures at Mar-a-Lago, Donald Trump proposed scrapping environmental measures put in place by the Biden administration if the oil magnates contributed $1 billion to his campaign for a second presidential term.

Trump mentioned that the contribution would be advantageous, as it would allow oil companies to bypass certain taxes and regulations due to his influence, as per the report. This information comes from individuals familiar with the discussion who requested to remain unnamed.

According to sources, Trump has offered a deal where he would eliminate the upcoming tougher EPA regulations on car emissions, which are expected to boost electric vehicle purchases—despite his disapproval—extending into the early 2020s, though not going as far as imposing a requirement for electric vehicles. Additionally, he would lift the current Biden administration's hold on approvals for new exports of liquefied natural gas and initiate additional bidding for oil exploration rights in the Gulf of Mexico.

During Biden's presidency, the United States has reached">king oil production levels, approaching an astounding 13 million barrels daily in the previous year, as highlighted in the report. The country's leading energy giants, ExxonMobil and Chevron, have also declared their highest earnings in ten years during the same period. Despite these achievements, the oil sector has expressed dissatisfaction with Biden's administration, specifically targeting the latest environmental regulations from the EPA concerning emissions.

According to the study, oil corporations have shown reluctance in financially supporting Trump's campaign efforts. Trump’s joint fundraising committee received over $6.4 million from oil sector donors in the initial quarter of the year, as per a review by Climate Power, an activist organization. Meanwhile, at a gathering in Mar-a-Lago, an oil industry leader allegedly claimed that they have invested $400 million in attempts to influence the Biden administration this year.

It should be noted that these firms expanded their portfolios, transforming into "energy companies" instead of merely oil companies, with gasoline now considered an old but still significant line of business. Therefore, their lack of quick response to Trump's proposition is not unexpected.

BP plans to acquire charging units from Tesla.

If leaders in the oil industry were to accept the proposal from the ex-president, it's likely he would deliver on his promise. Under Trump's previous administration, his team tried but couldn't strip California of its power to regulate emissions and also put off enforcing steeper penalties on car manufacturers that didn't hit their emissions goals.

Should Trump secure another term, he may not stop at rolling back tighter emissions regulations and policies favoring electric vehicles when it comes to">king up the automotive sector. He has declared an intention to impose a 100% tariff on cars from China, regardless of whether they are assembled in Mexico. There are hints he might aim to further tear apart the remnants of NAFTA. This agreement currently permits vehicles manufactured in Mexico by international car companies to enter the U.S. market without tariffs and qualify for certain government incentives.
