Alex Marquez Defends Integrity: Denies Deliberate Contact in Aragon MotoGP Incident with Bagnaia
Alex Marquez denies accusations: “I would never intentionally collide with another rider”
Alex Marquez dismisses claims that he 'intentionally' collided with Francesco Bagnaia, stating: 'It's against my nature and against the principles of this sport'
Alex Marquez has issued a response after coming across certain comments following his incident with Francesco Bagnaia during the Aragon MotoGP on Sunday.
The duo found themselves in a serious crash when Bagnaia tried to overtake the Gresini racer for the third position, following Marquez's wide turn.
The FIM Stewards concluded that 'no additional measures' were required as 'neither rider was found to be mainly at fault'.
However, Marquez appears dissatisfied with Bagnaia's remarks implying that the Gresini rider maintained acceleration instead of trying to steer clear of a collision.
"As I went into the next corner, which was turn 13, I heard his engine revving up. He was accelerating. It was clear he was aiming for this contact," Bagnaia explained to MotoGP.com.
"I was interested in examining that data… He kept the throttle open between 40 and 60 percent right up until the moment he crashed. That seems really odd for a rider, in my opinion."
On Monday, Marquez shared a post on social media:
“Having reviewed several statements, I want to clarify the following points:
"I would never intentionally collide with another rider, and I refuse to be accused of doing so. It goes against my principles and the very essence of this sport."
"The conversation I had with Pecco yesterday is what matters most to me, and as far as I'm concerned, the matter is resolved."
"Now I need to take a break and let my body heal so I can be in top form for Misano."
Marquez and Bagnaia were lucky to escape without major injuries and are set to return to the track at Misano this weekend.
In the Aragon race, Alex's teammate and sibling, Marc Marquez, secured the victory. Meanwhile, Jorge Martin's second-place finish has extended his lead over Bagnaia to 23 points.
