Adrian Newey’s Red Bull Departure: Long Time Coming, Says Martin Brundle Amid F1 Shake-Up

Published

Martin Brundle reveals Adrian Newey has contemplated departing Red Bull for quite a while.

Martin Brundle has disclosed that Adrian Newey, the iconic Formula 1 car designer, has been contemplating an exit from Red Bull for quite a while.

Before the Miami Grand Prix this weekend, Red Bull announced that Newey will leave the team in early 2025 after almost 20 years of service.

Ex-F1 driver, now analyst and commentator, Brundle, mentions that Newey has contemplated leaving Red Bull for “quite a while”.

"Brundle shared with Sky that he's quite familiar with Adrian and that this decision has been on his mind for a while."

A few years back, it almost occurred, and it's clear that for several decades, numerous teams have pursued him due to his remarkable track record. Whenever he becomes part of a team, they soon begin to secure World Championships. This is undeniable, as evidenced by the statistics.

"I believe it's not solely focused on the early season events at Red Bull, but rather, there are several elements at play. This idea has been brewing in his thoughts for quite some time."

He spends 150 days annually working at Red Bull. Adrian has been focusing on other interests – hypercars, America's Cup yachts, and he possesses some impressive race cars that he enjoys racing.

"Adrian has been gradually progressing toward this goal for a while."

The announcement has led to a desperate rush to acquire the services of the 65-year-old, with Ferrari emerging as the leading contender to snatch up Newey. It's also known that Williams has initiated discussions.

2009 Formula One World Champion, Jenson Button, suggests that any team acquiring Newey will see an instant improvement.

"Simply entering the room has an impact, even before he takes any action," Button remarked.

Before he even begins to write, merely by being in his company, you're aware of his previous accomplishments and the value he adds to the group.

Throughout my entire profession, I faced off against his vehicles, and it proved to be extremely challenging.

Red Bull recognized that eventually, Adrian Newey would depart from the team. Therefore, the design and aerodynamics team beneath him has been well-prepared to manage future projects in his absence.

"Therefore, Red Bull doesn't concern me. However, it's thrilling. He’s going to be in high demand, with every team hoping to have him on their side."

Brundle has suggested that Newey might move to Ferrari, but Button believes he will remain in the UK.

"He believes he'll remain in the UK," he mentioned. "Relocating to Italy is a significant change. Perhaps Mercedes could be an option?"
