Adrian Newey Set to Shift Gears: Free to Join Rival F1 Team in 2025 Without Gardening Leave

Published

on

Adrian Newey is apparently free to join another F1 team starting in 2025, as he has no "gardening leave" restrictions.

According to reports, Adrian Newey won't be required to undergo any "gardening leave" following his departure from Red Bull.

It has been announced that the mastermind behind the car's design is leaving the team after a 19-year tenure.

Newey is set to reduce his everyday responsibilities right away, though he plans to be present at several Formula 1 races this season with Red Bull.

He will continue to concentrate on the RB17 hypercar initiative throughout the remainder of 2024.

Newey is set to officially depart from Red Bull in spring 2025, at which point he is free to immediately switch to a competing Formula 1 team, should he choose to do so.

According to a report by The Athletic, there will not be any contract clauses that restrict "free agent" Newey's future employment opportunities.

According to BBC, Newey will have the opportunity to significantly influence the 2026 vehicle of any team he decides to join, implying he can begin his contributions starting from 2025.

It's a common practice for the top figures in Formula 1 to be subject to "gardening leave" or clauses that prevent them from competing, and it was believed that Newey's agreement with Red Bull contained such a provision.

His agreement with Red Bull was set to expire at the close of 2025, meaning a one-year period of gardening leave would prevent him from signing with a different team until 2027. By then, the latest Formula 1 rules would have been in effect for a year.

Newey's legal team has effectively arranged for the elimination of that clause.

Thus, upon his formal departure from Red Bull at the start of 2025, he will be able to transition into a fresh role.

Ferrari and Aston Martin, notably, will be especially vigilant.

According to sources, Newey has turned down a lucrative offer to be a part of Aston Martin, a move funded by billionaire proprietor Lawrence Stroll.

Italian outlets are reporting that Fred Vasseur, the team principal of Ferrari, made a trip to London on Tuesday, just one day before Red Bull formally announced Newey's departure.

Vasseur visited the city for discussions with Newey, increasing the chances that he will become part of the renowned team, which is also set to bring Lewis Hamilton on board in 2025.
