Formula 1 engineering icon Adrian Newey shares his reasons for selecting Aston Martin over other opportunities available to him.
F1 engineering legend Adrian Newey has disclosed the primary reasons for his choice to become part of Aston Martin.
The renowned designer, aged 65, is set to begin his new role as Managing Technical Partner at Aston Martin on the 1st of March, 2025, after leaving Red Bull. It's rumored that Newey has agreed to a five-year deal which could see him earning as much as £30 million annually.
Newey disclosed that the significant impact of Lawrence Stroll, the owner of the Aston Martin team, played a pivotal role in his ultimate choice. He was swayed by the Canadian billionaire's grand vision to transform the Silverstone team into contenders for the world championship.
"Over the years, Lawrence and I have had an intermittent acquaintance," Newey remarked during an Aston Martin press briefing at Silverstone on Tuesday. "We frequently encounter each other while working out, especially during races in the Middle East and Far East."
Therefore, as I somewhat mentioned earlier, when I shared with everyone my decision to leave my previous team, I was quite honored to receive interest from several different teams.
Truly, the zeal, dedication, and fervor that Lawrence exhibits are quite charming. They have a strong ability to convince others. The truth is, if you look back two decades, the individuals we currently refer to as team principals were actually the proprietors of their respective teams, including notable figures like Frank Williams, Ron Dennis, Eddie Jordan, among others.
In today's times, Lawrence stands out as the sole team owner who is genuinely engaged in his role. This distinct involvement of someone like Lawrence undoubtedly adds a unique vibe to the scenario.
"Returning to the traditional approach and being given the opportunity to become both a shareholder and a partner is an offer that's entirely new to me. Thus, it presents a unique perspective. It's an opportunity I'm eagerly anticipating. It emerged as a quite obvious decision."
At one point, there was strong speculation that Newey would team up with Lewis Hamilton at Ferrari, and he was also rumored to be in talks with both McLaren and Williams. Ultimately, Aston Martin emerged as the victor in clinching his sought-after expertise.
In response to why he chose Aston Martin instead of other teams, Newey answered, "Lawrence, it's quite simple! Honestly, I believed I was in need of a fresh challenge.
Towards the end of April, I realized it was time for a change. I spent considerable time conversing with Mandy, my wife, contemplating our next move. 'Should we embark on a global sailing adventure? Or perhaps I should pursue a new direction, maybe the America's Cup or something along those lines?'
"We decided to take a short break, and I consider myself fortunate to have realized my dream since I was 10 or 12 years old, which was to become a designer, not even labeling myself as an engineer, in the realm of motor racing."
"I must admit, achieving that immediately after university has made everything else feel like an extra reward."
"Of course, I never anticipated being part of such incredible experiences, but it's important to remain true to yourself and maintain your vitality. Therefore, I realized I was in need of a new venture and decided to take some time off."
