Adrian Newey Chooses Aston Martin Over Ferrari: Inside the Decision That Shook F1
Adrian Newey discusses Ferrari's interest after joining Aston Martin: "Ultimately…"
Adrian Newey talks about Ferrari's interest and his discussions with other competing teams.
Adrian Newey has explained his decision to choose Aston Martin instead of Ferrari.
On Tuesday morning, Aston Martin announced Newey as their new managing technical partner.
Newey will lead Aston Martin's Formula 1 technical team, providing direction and oversight to the skilled engineers and designers within the organization.
Aston Martin has achieved a significant victory by securing the services of Formula 1's top car designer, especially given that Ferrari, McLaren, and Williams were also keen on hiring Newey.
On the day before the Miami Grand Prix, when it was revealed that Newey would be leaving Red Bull, many believed Ferrari was the leading contender to secure his services.
As the weeks went by, Aston Martin gained the upper hand, with a visit to their headquarters playing a crucial role in securing Newey's contract.
After his introduction, Newey was questioned regarding the discussions with Ferrari.
“I felt quite honored by the many teams that reached out to me,” Newey stated.
"I spoke with several of those teams, though not every one of them, and ultimately, the decision felt straightforward and instinctive."
Aston Martin has made significant investments in their Silverstone site, including the installation of a new wind tunnel.
In 2026, the team will rely solely on Honda for power, providing them with the optimal setup to meet the new technical rules.
Newey admitted that Lawrence Stroll's "dedication" and "passion" played a significant role in his decision to join Aston Martin.
"When I shared that I would be leaving the former team, I was honored to receive numerous offers from other teams," he mentioned.
"Lawrence's dedication, zeal, and excitement were charming and convincing."
