Adrian Newey and Fernando Alonso: A Dream Team Finally Unites at Aston Martin
Adrian Newey's past comments on Fernando Alonso
The renowned figures in Formula 1, Adrian Newey and Fernando Alonso, are anticipated to team up at Aston Martin in the upcoming year.
Renowned Formula 1 designer Adrian Newey is teaming up with double world champion Fernando Alonso.
The anticipated transition of the 65-year-old to Aston Martin next year is slated for official announcement on Tuesday, following reports of agreeing to a five-year deal potentially valued at £30 million annually.
In 2025, the departing Red Bull technical director Newey will at last have the opportunity to collaborate with Alonso. The British engineer has previously expressed in interviews his high regard and esteem for Alonso.
Previously, Newey has explicitly mentioned Alonso and the seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton as drivers he would like to collaborate with.
"In an interview with the BBC last year, Newey expressed that his primary regret was not having had a more extended association with Ayrton [Senna]."
Regarding the topic of drivers, Fernando [Alonso] is someone I've always wished we could have worked with. It's a disappointment that it never came to fruition, as I hold Fernando in very high esteem.
"Truthfully, my approach is to focus on living in the now and what's ahead, rather than dwelling on what has passed."
"Regrets? Not at all. I consider myself extremely fortunate to have encountered the chances that came my way, to have collaborated with the individuals I did, and to have met the people I have."
According to motorsport advisor Helmut Marko, there was an opportunity for Newey to collaborate with Alonso earlier, however, Red Bull was not successful in their efforts to secure his signature.
"Marko disclosed during his appearance on the Inside Line F1 podcast that the team had discussions with Alonso around 2008, before they began their streak of victories."
"I suppose he didn't regard us with much seriousness. Consequently, it never came to fruition."
In 2019, there were whispers that Red Bull was considering Alonso.
In the midst of rumors, Newey was reported in an interview with Esquire, a Spanish publication, saying, "It appears he's been unfortunate with several decisions he opted for, but anytime we've had conversations with him, he's always been extremely courteous.
"Fernando frequently outperforms the capabilities of the car he's driving. This, in my opinion, signifies the trait of an exceptional driver – shining through even without the advantage of a superior vehicle."
