Der Neue im SUV-Segment: Mazda CX-80 – Größer, Stärker, Eleganter

Published

on

The 2024 Mazda CX-80 is the latest addition to the brand's lineup, adding a seven-seater SUV option.

Familiar engines, including a substantial diesel option, are borrowed from its five-seater sibling, the CX-60…

The title of Mazda's premier vehicle in Europe was held by the CX-60 for less than two years before being overtaken by an even larger model. As the marketing team shifts its narrative from "Noble Toughness" to "Graceful Toughness," we welcome the new Mazda CX-80 with open arms.

The CX-80 is fundamentally built on the technical framework of the CX-60. It also largely adopts the design of its predecessor. However, the dimensions and proportions have been modified to create more space, accommodating a third row of seating.

Voters have a choice between two powertrains: a plug-in hybrid capable of 60 km on electric power and a 3.3-liter inline six-cylinder diesel engine delivering 254 horsepower. Is it worth the wait for the order books to open? We've had the chance to sit inside the new SUV.

The Appearance

From a frontal viewpoint, the design remains unchanged. The front end continues to present a robust appearance, led by a prominent grille that merges into the full-LED headlights on either side. The hood stretches out in length while the cabin appears to perch atop the rear axle, accentuating the vehicle's architecture that emphasizes a front-engine and rear-drive focus, all in a single line.

When you stack it up against the CX-60, the fresh CX-80 model stretches out an additional 25 centimeters in length, stands 24 millimeters taller, and boasts a wheelbase that's expanded by 25 centimeters. One might wonder if its size will deliver an enjoyable driving experience even without the feature of all-wheel steering. That's something only a preliminary road test in the days ahead can determine. But for now, let's dive into some more comparative figures…

From a side view, one can notice the extended window panels. The wheels measure up to 20 inches in diameter, which may seem modest in size compared to the car's striking overall appearance. The rear end, with its LED taillights, appears more conventional. A notable feature at the back is the absence of exhaust pipes, suggesting that the designers did not find them aesthetically pleasing. However, the car's new body color, "Melting Copper," is undoubtedly elegant.

Interior Space

We're taking a reverse approach starting from the trunk. There's a space of 258 liters between the powered tailgate and the third row of seats. Folding down the last row expands the luggage compartment to 687 liters, and with just the front seats occupied, the capacity increases to a substantial 1,971 liters.

The luggage compartment features a powerful 1,500-watt power outlet, and the rear seat can slide back and forth by 120 millimeters, in addition to the adjustable backrests that enhance comfort and flexibility.

Given the external dimensions, it's obvious that there's ample room for passengers (and for us during our initial seating test). According to Mazda, the third row can comfortably accommodate two passengers up to 1.70 meters tall.

So we immediately climb up to what we think are the cheapest seats. It's definitely not a treat for someone who's 6 feet tall, but at least the entry through the large rear doors is decent, and the view from the big windows is also pleasing, making the cramped space a bit more bearable. Plus, the materials used throughout, even in the back, are top-notch. It fits the bill.

The vehicle comes equipped with top-notch technology, featuring two sizable 12-inch screens for both the instrument panel and the infotainment system. The system has been updated to the latest version, offering compatibility with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and when connected to the internet, it includes integration with Amazon Alexa.

The vehicle is equipped with the latest generation of driver assistance technologies, along with an array of helpful features, including a 360-degree camera system that boasts a "Trail" feature with a zoom function to aid in utilizing the trailer hitch. By the way, it's capable of towing up to 2.5 tons.

The Mazda CX-80 will hit the market offering two powertrain options: a plug-in hybrid and a six-cylinder mild-hybrid diesel engine. Both will come standard with all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The PHEV comes equipped with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine that is paired with a 129-kW electric motor. Together, they produce a total output of 327 horsepower and a peak torque of 500 Nm. This allows the vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.8 seconds and achieve a top speed of 195 km/h.

The lithium-ion battery, which has a capacity of 17.8 kWh, ensures an electric range of 60 km as per the WLTP cycle, with the manufacturer stating a combined consumption of 1.6 liters per 100 km. For context, the CX-60 can travel an additional 3 km and uses 0.1 liters less fuel. This seems reasonable.

The engine in question is the familiar 3.3-liter mild hybrid inline-six, delivering 254 horsepower and 550 Nm of torque. Performance-wise, it's quite capable, achieving 0 to 100 km/h in just 8.4 seconds and topping out at a maximum speed of 219 km/h. This matches the performance of the previous flagship model. However, the fuel consumption is reportedly about 0.5 liters per 100 kilometers higher.

Options and Costs

The latest Mazda CX-80 is presented in five different trim levels: Exlusive-Line, Homura, Takumi, Homura Plus, and Takumi Plus. Unlike other models, there isn't a basic Prime-Line version available. Every version of the Mazda CX-80 comes with a standard seven-seat configuration, which includes three seats in the second row.

The Homura and Homura Plus models offer an optional six-seater configuration featuring a pair of individual seats in the second row. Within the Takumi Plus trim level, the second row comes with two separate ventilated seats, complete with a center console.

The standard features across all models are impressive, including power-adjustable front seats, three-zone automatic climate control, a central 12.3-inch display, and compatibility with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Increased coverage on Mazda, featuring more reviews:

The starting cost for the latest Mazda CX-80 is currently set at 55,350 Euros for the e-Skyactiv PHEV Exclusive-Line model. This means there's an additional charge of 4,500 Euros when compared to the similarly equipped and powered Mazda CX-60.

By the way, the manufacturer hasn't disclosed the cost of the diesel version yet. However, if the price gap for the PHEV between the 60 and 80 models is any indication, we could be looking at a starting price of €59,050 for the diesel.
