2027 MotoGP Shake-Up: Riders React to New Rules on Ride-Height, Engines, and Aero

2027 MotoGP regulations: Elimination of ride-height devices hailed as 'excellent' – aerodynamics, 850cc motors 'to remain mostly unchanged'

Pedro Acosta, Fabio Quartararo, and Johann Zarco discuss upcoming technical regulations in MotoGP.

On Thursday, during the French MotoGP event, participants shared their initial thoughts on the technical regulations set to be introduced in 2027.

The updated rules, which are scheduled to be in effect for the standard duration of five years, feature a reduction in engine size from 1000cc to 850cc, the elimination of ride height adjustment systems, limitations on aerodynamics, the requirement for GPS data sharing, the use of entirely non-fossil fuels, and more stringent controls on the number of engine swaps and fuel tank size.

However, for newcomer sensation Pedro Acosta and local favorite Fabio Quartararo, the only major change will come from the ban on ride height adjustments.

"Acosta believes that altering the cc might not make a difference. He suggests that potentially, the [ride height] device could," he said.

"The process will become somewhat simpler for us, particularly during the initial phase, as it's quite challenging to initiate the front followed by activating the rear, the launch control, and several other steps before beginning."

"However, reducing the aerodynamics at the front slightly, in my opinion, won't make any difference."

Yamaha's reigning 2021 world champion, Quartararo, expressed his approval, stating, "Removing the [ride height] device, in my opinion, is a positive step. It doesn't seem to significantly alter the aerodynamics, and for the [850]cc category, it doesn't really make a substantial difference."

"Perhaps as you approach Mugello at such a velocity, it indeed seems rapid, yet I believe it doesn't truly make a significant difference."

Acosta also forecasted that the performance level will remain consistent, with the 2027 motorcycles achieving higher speeds in turns because of their reduced weight.

Johann Zarco of LCR Honda concurred that the primary goal for the engineers will be to maintain the existing performance standards.

"Zarco believes that all changes are intriguing and given the distance in time, it's hard to make predictions. However, by 2027, he anticipates that motorcycles will have reached a certain benchmark of improvement. At that point, he suggests, the real test for engineers will be to achieve the same level of performance or lap times with fewer components on the motorcycles."

"For cyclists, it might become easier since the bicycles will likely feel more intuitive to handle, but it's too early to say for sure. Regardless, these developments will challenge the engineers to advance further."
